CMSIS inHandlerMode() Function

i am using CMSIS on a STM32. I stumbled upon a function which seems to be able to detect whether i'm in an IRQ handler or "normal" thread mode.



Basically this function ends up calling



__attribute__( ( always_inline ) ) __STATIC_INLINE uint32_t __get_IPSR(void)
{
uint32_t result;

__ASM volatile ("MRS %0, ipsr" : "=r" (result) );
return(result);
}


my assembler is a little rusty. But if i got this right this reads the content of some core register called IPSR?!
According to ARMs support document:

If this register value is 0 i'm in thread mode otherwise i'm in an IRQ handler.



Why do i need the assembler stuff to read this register, why can i not access the register the same way i access all other registers?

Can i make this function non static (aka publically visible) or did the CMSIS guys made this function private for a good reason?
