Struts2 - addFieldError on double

I'm having a problem in validate() method in action class.

if (checkerObj.getSalesRetailPrice().toString().trim().length() == 0) {

        addFieldError("salesRetailPrice", "Must be positive.");

    }

My if doesn't work. It returns java.lang.NullPointerException
What solution is possible for this problem? The error is below

My guess is that checkerObj.getSalesRetailPrice() is defined as a Double. This will not be set by Struts unless a valid double request parameter is sent to it by the form and is therefore null. In this case, you would need to check for != null and > 0.
