After upgrade from 2015->2018, items do not display correctly in the Kanban board

We recently upgraded from tfs 2015 to tfs 2018, but now items (bugs and product backlogs) do not show correctly in the Kanban board.
You can still see the columns for the states ("To do", "In progress" and "Done" in our case), but all the items are just listed to the left of the state columns; they do not show in the actual columns regardless of state and cannot be dragged.
You can still set the state of the items manually, and they change colour according to the styles, but still just show to the left of all the columns (or stretched right across if collapsed).
Possibly related: When you check-in from Visual studio, you can add the related work-item but cannot automatically set it to resolved (only 'associated' which doesn't change the item state). We used to be able to do this.

I've partially answered my own question: In the "Configure team settings" window of the board there is a "Working with bugs" section. There I changed "Bugs are managed with requirements" to "Bugs are managed with tasks". Non-bugs still show to the left or (when collapsed) stretched across the board but I'm struggling to remember what they used to look like.
