In Cloud Dataflow, how do I know when the pipeline code is being executed synchronously or asynchronously?

I'm having problems understanding how Cloud Dataflow knows when to execute the pipeline code synchronously or asynchronously.

For example, in a pipeline I've developed, I read a file that contains a list of IDs and create a sideInput out of it. This sideinput is used by a ParDo transform with another PCollection that is created by reading another file.

In this sense, Dataflow first needs the sideInput to be fully built before executing the ParDo transform.

How do I know when the pipeline is executing in "synchronous or asynchronous mode"? Do I have any controls over this?
