“hadoop checknative -a ” does not detect snappy even if it is installed

Trying to setup hadoop native libs, so I can run C++ jobs using mapred pipes ...

All jobs fail currently, that's because snappy is not detected by hadoop installation. Below is the ouput of hadoop checknative -a

enter image description here

  • My hadoop is built from source code (v3.1.1)

  • I checked out snappy and built it, it created the files /usr/lib/x86_64/libsnappy.so|a|..., but hadoop checknative -a still shows snappy: false.

  • I also installed snappy via sudo apt get install snappy-dev, same problem.

  • I ran ld -l snappy --verbose and I could see that snappy was found in /usr/lib/x86_64/libsnappy.so, but Mister Hadoop still refuses to acknowledge its existence.

  • libcrypto.so is also needed by hadoop, and I have it in the same directory as libsnappy.so, but Hadoop finds the former and not the later. Grrrrrrrr.

Any ideas ?
