Minimum client library version for MySQL

I need to connect to MySQL 5.6 from C program that has to run on Windows XP.
I have tried to use MySQL client 3.23.49 but I am getting error like this "Client does not support authentication protocol requested by server; consider upgrading MySQL client".
Is there information what is minimum required client library version to connect to certain version of MySQL server? It is not possible to use latest version of mysql client library because they seem don't support Windows XP.
